Computing

Each student in the class will have access to a virtual cluster of 6 machines using our VMware server-- a server and 5 clients on a private VLAN. Initially, these machines will be configured with Ubuntu Linux. The machines will be identical except that the server will have greater capabilities for communicating with the outside world.

To configure these machines initially, you will need to use the VMware Virtual Infrastructure Client. This is only available for Windows (sorry!). The VMware client is installed on all CCIS machines, and is available for download at http://vcs.ccs.neu.edu/.

Once you get your machines set up, you will most likely communicate with them via ssh or VNC.

I've created a wiki page for notes on this and similar things. I believe that the wiki is set up so that you can read and edit these pages. Please let me know if you have difficulty doing either of these.

Xin Dong will be providing you with more information later.
