Our student course evaluation forms ask students to report the average number of hours per week spent preparing. In Fall 2007, the last time I taught this class, we got the following distribution (N = 11):

| 14-15 hrs | 4 |
| 16-17 hrs | 2 |
| 18-19 hrs | 0 |
| 20-21 hrs | 1 |
| 22 or more hrs | 2 |
To save you the effort: this says that the median (and mean) was 15-16 hours per week. So be warned!
The SCE forms also asked students to rate how many of those hours were valuable. I won't reproduce the distribution here, but the mean and median were both around 12 hours per week.
I also had students report the time they spent on each assignment.
The mean and median times reported averaged around 10 hours per problem.
