Virtual Machine Setup Instructions
We will be using Ubuntu Linux for this class, running as a virtual machine under VMware Fusion (Mac) or VMware Workstation (Windows). Instructions for installation are provided below.
Note that you are free to use other solutions, such as a native Linux system, but please be aware that grading tests will be run on these (or equivalent) systems. You will need to manage any issues with your own setup independently.
Windows Installation:
- Download VMware-workstation-full-17.6.0-24238078.exe and install.
- Download the virtual machine image, CS5600-Fall-2024.ova, then double-click on it.
- If prompted for an application to open the file, select “VMware Workstation”. If asked for a license key, select “for personal use”.
VMware will now import the virtual machine image, which will take approximately 11-12GB of disk space.
Apple Mac Installation:
- Download VMware-Fusion-13.6.0-24238079_universal.dmg, open, and then “Double-Click to Install VMware Fusion”.
- Enter your password, then when prompted for a license key, select “I want to license VMware Fusion 13 Pro for Personal Use”.
- Agree to the EULA, etc.
- You’ll be asked to give VMware Fusion extra permissions – make sure the toggle next to “VMware Fusion” is turned on.
If Mac has Apple Silicon:
- Download CS5600-Fall-2024.zip and unzip it if necessary. (Safari will automatically unzip it, but Chrome will not), creating the directory
CS5600-fall-2024.vmwarevm
. - Double-click on this directory to open it in VMware Fusion. When asked whether the virtual machine has been moved or copied, click “I Copied It”.
If Mac has Intel:
- Download the virtual machine image, CS5600-Fall-2024.ova, then double-click on it.
- If prompted for an application to open the file, select “VMware Fusion”. If asked for a license key, select “for personal use”.
Login Credentials:
- User ID:
cs5600
- Password:
111111
- The VM is set to auto-login on boot.
