The following description of the waterfall model is something of a caricature or straw man. Less cartoonish versions of the waterfall model have been used successfully, and are occasionally used even today. Caricatures serve a pedagogical purpose, however, because it is often easier to understand an idea in its purest and most extreme form than to understand a more complex and nuanced description of the idea.
