Having reached an agreement to invest in a 12-inch fab in Xiamen, China recently, United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) has insisted that it will keep its advanced manufacturing processes, mainly 28/14nm processes, in Taiwan. UMC said it will continue to ramp up production capacity of its Fab 12A Phase 5 projects at Tainan Science Park, with plans to start installing production equipment in February 2015. UMC will build the 12-inch fab in Xiamen in cooperation with Xiamen Municipal Government, and Fujian Electronics and Information Group. The new plant, which requires a total investment of up to US$6.2 billion, is scheduled to start production by the end of 2016 and will have a production capacity of 50,000 wafers a month, using 55/40nm processes initially. UMC stated that the new fab will help it expand market share and facilitate the integration of orders and manufacturing processes for its clients.
